Listening to amazarashi and Ling tosite sigure. It hadn't occurred to me till now that both bands have the word "rain" in their name.

On another note, I'd finished playing the doujin BL game Koshotengai no Hashihime a few days ago. The bulk of the story takes place on rainy days, so yeah, more rain. It's an interesting game; I might talk about it more once I make up my mind as to how I feel about it.

Happy Valentine's Day! Been thinking about chocolates lately. Thought I'll reread est em's Une histoire d’un amateur de friandises. It's either that or Mizushiro Setona's Shitsuren Chocolatier. Ono Natsume doesn't seem to have a manga about chocolates, so I'll settle for watching Jean smoke in ACCA 13-ku Kansatsuka instead.

amazarashi did a collaboration with the upcoming PS4 game Nier:Automata and released a music video inspired by the game's worldview. The song is called "命にふさわしい" (or "Deserving of Life"). The music video can be viewed here.

Takahashi Ryo, the composer of ACCA 13-ku Kansatsu-ka soundtrack, formed the new musical unit One III Notes with female vocalist PON and MC/rapper Foggy-D specifically to perform the OP theme song of ACCA. As Takahashi Ryo envisions it, One III Notes is a musical group that exists within the world of ACCA.

I got a few chocolate truffles from someone, who got them at someone else's birthday party. I looked up the brand, and apparently they were made by a family-owned independent chocolaterie located at a city somewhere to the west. Chance encounter can be a funny thing, even if it's just chocolates.

Watched the first two episodes of Quartet. I like it so far. The characters don't always say what they really mean or think, and they all seem to have a secret or two. The theme song "Otona no Okite" is composed by Shiina Ringo, and it's sung by the actresses and actors who play the main characters in the series. It's a typical Shiina Ringo jazzy song with string accompaniment, and the lyrics is classic Shiina Ringo as well. I'm waiting to see if they'll release the song in full in some form. (ETA: The full version has just been released.)

Speaking of which, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu season 2 has just reached a turning point in its narrative. The opening theme song (once again composed by Shiina Ringo) and the opening sequence haven't been subtle about what will transpire; I like it all the same. It's interesting that the connotation of candles being a representation of life (and a candle being extinguished representing death) exists both in the east and in the west (see Macbeth's "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" soliloquy).

Apparently Final Fantasy is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Today also marks the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. SquareEnix has released a new piece of visual art for the FFVII remake. Wonder if it will take them another ten years to finish the remake -- just in time for FFVII's 30th anniversary...

Yamamoto Takato drew the cover art for MUCC's new album, Myakuhaku. I'm not a MUCC fan, but anyway...

A line from Shakespeare's Sonnet 73.

I know I'm a day late, but Happy Lunar New Year to anyone who celebrates it.

Been reading Haruki Murakami's Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. "The Year of Spaghetti" has left an impression on me. Here's a quote: "Can you imagine how astonished the Italians would be if they knew that what they were exporting in 1971 was really loneliness?" Another story I quite like is "Chance Traveler", a story about coincidence, where Murakami himself asserts in the beginning that what happened in the story did happen to him.

I like that it's possible to experience his stories in different ways. You can accept the supernatural/stranger element in his stories as it is, or you can read it as a metaphor for something else. I don't have a fixed view on how a story should be read; it's more fun that way.

An aside: Thinking up a good title for a story is hard.

The temperature has been above the freezing mark lately, so we've been having several foggy mornings and foggy nights. I have not seen a single patch of dry ground outdoors for close to a week.

Aoki Yutaka of downy has released his first solo album Lost in Forest, with Morrie, Kaoru and Sugizo as guest musicians. I like it a lot; it makes me want to write something with this album as the soundtrack.

Watched Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress. In a way, these two films are like two sides of a coin. Both films feature an actress as the main character. In both films, the actresses' professional work is bleeding into their personal life, and the line between reality and illusion is blurred, albeit to different effects.

Perfect Blue is a psychological thriller. As the main character becomes unable to tell what's real and what's not, the story, already unsettling to begin with, takes on an increasingly terrifying and paranoid note. Millennium Actress, on the other hand, takes on a whimsical approach. There is some fourth wall breaking in the process, which leads to some genuinely funny moments.

Of the two films, Millennium Actress is a lot easier to swallow. Perfect Blue has several disturbing scenes that are very uncomfortable to watch. The film also exposes the sexism and the objectifying of women inherent within the entertainment industry, as well as the ugly reality of the idol business. As a thriller film though, it works.

Millennium Actress has none of that (or very little of that). It's a charming and light-hearted film detailing an actress' life story. And yes, I cried at the end of this film.
